Dear students, professors, wonderful ICM staff, my friends,
I am incredibly happy to stand here right in front of you today on this memorable and important day. It seems unbelievable that I have completed this enjoyable 1 year journey at ICM. Words can’t explain all my excitement, all my joy that I am part of it and all my sadness that it has finished. I still remember and cherish every single moment. So let me share my humble experience.
All of you have heard famous journey stories like “Alice in Wonderland”. And it seems like I can definitely associate my stay here and experience with Alice’s. Because Canada is the land of wonders to me and I am sure to all of other students who came from all of over the world to here too. I still remember me in Moscow right before the flight to Toronto. How much scared I was. I think it is only comparable to the degree of my curiosity. For many people back home my decision sounded crazy. Not so many people decide to fly over the ocean, to another land, to the new world. But my origin comes from a nomadic nation, so crave for changes and exploring new lands is in my blood. And mentioning my origin — that was the thing! I had no idea that the fact that I am from Russia will bring so much of attention to me. But I got so used to it, so when I go back home and no one is surprised that I am Russian makes me feel awkward! But anyways I’m really hoping that I am completing the mission of informal ambassador of my Buryat nation with pride and honour.
And I am really happy that I might be the reason of broadening someone’s outlook. And this is also one of the best points of ICM. Just being ICM student lets a person to get to know so many things we had no idea about. Culture, traditions, new languages, cuisine — National Geographic issue cannot compare to that! ICM geography is so broad that all the students from ICM can flaunt that we have friends from all over the world. And any journey can be completed easier if you have a friend, who you always can rely on.
And back to journey stories. So the story I think which is very similar to mine is the animation “Up”. The first time I saw that cartoon was at ICM movie night. Everybody knows that I like to attend ICM events; they are exciting and full of fun!
That might sound a little strange that I mention this cartoon. But I will explain why I do it. I guess all of us have 2 sides of personality: that old moody man who might hold us down and that cheerful plump boy with big cheeks who is always ready for adventures! I have been through lots of things: rises and falls, moments of sadness and happiness. I even broke my jaw. I could not eat for a very long time and I lost a lot of weight. So everything has positive sides! And every time I had those two talking in my head: the one who was preventing me from doing something crazy and the one who was always eager to explore everything new. But finally in the story the funny boy takes over and old man becomes a little more kind. So what I encourage you to is to be always open for the change. You can never know what is going to happen tomorrow. But whatever happens is for the better. Don’t let a gloomy man be on your way to pursuing your dreams. You should always be ready to seize the day, capture the moment and you will be always going up. And even if you are going down, don’t worry, what if it’s the rabbit hole which is going to bring you to the Wonderland?
